A mixed media pop-up experiment.

Created with a motor, twine, markers, magnets, burlap, illustration board, and a Sony FS700.

It took 41 takes to nail the shot.

Process:

The setup.

The picture car (tractor) and camera were pulled along by a gearmotor secured to the tabletop.

As the tractor's "planter" went along, it hit the pop-up pieces' tabs, causing them to flip up and magnetize to the tabletop.

It proved an exacting science to get the pieces to pop into the right places. Each take, results were slightly different.

To make it magnetic, the tabletop was covered with metal plates that were sitting around in the studio that were stamped "LB." They must have been destined for this project :)
